Veterinary Compounding

Compounded medications prepared for animal patients, ordered by a veterinarian.

Veterinary compounding is the preparation of compounded medications for animal patients, including cats, dogs, exotics, and large animals. Veterinary compounded medications are prescription-only and ordered by the animal's veterinarian.

Common veterinary compounding requests include flavored oral suspensions, transdermal gels (especially for cats), small or exotic species dosing, and reformulations that remove ingredients an animal cannot tolerate.

Veterinary compounding follows the same regulatory framework as human compounding and is governed by state boards of pharmacy. Pharmacies prepare veterinary compounds on a per-prescription basis.

The decision to prescribe a compounded medication for an animal is clinical and is made by the veterinarian. The pharmacy prepares the prescription as written.
