Transdermal Preparation
A topical formulation designed to deliver medication through the skin into the bloodstream.
A transdermal preparation is a topical formulation designed to deliver active medication through the skin into the bloodstream. Compounding pharmacies prepare transdermal creams and gels in custom strengths and ingredient combinations when a commercial transdermal product is not available.
Transdermal preparations are frequently used for hormone replacement, hormone replacement in veterinary patients (especially cats), and certain pain management formulations where an oral route is not feasible.
Transdermal compounded preparations are prescription-only and prepared on a per-patient basis. The pharmacy follows the prescriber's order for active, strength, and base.
Patients should follow the pharmacy's instructions for application site, hand hygiene, and avoiding transfer to others (including pets, children, and partners).
